Eating Japan: Unagi Donburi, Narita


The chef mutters something to me in Japanese. Looking at my puzzled face, he repeats the same. This time, however, he also points the sharp knife in his hand at a bowl of innards in front of him. I look at the bowl and nod with amazement.

Thyme After Thyme


I'm so glad that the thyme in my backyard has so far survived my black thumb. Despite the demise of its former neighbours - chilli, basil, coriander and parsley - it is still (miraculously) blooming.  So, when I was planning lunch for my close friends one day, it was easy to decide on this dish.

Armory Wharf Cafe, Newington


I first read about the Armory Wharf Cafe in a local newspaper. I think it was early 2008 and this popular cafe on the riverbank of Paramatta River had just been burned to the ground by suspected arsonists.

This bakery in the trendy inner city suburb of Surry Hills is a personal favourite of mine. One only has to come here on a Saturday morning to witness its popularity. Co-owners Paul Allam & David McGuiness have even a published book to prove it.
